Abstract : In experiments on mangoes at Kalyani, West Bengal, treatment with TIBA at 10³ mg/litre produced maximum (25%) flowering in cv. Langra compared with 6.7% in controls. In regular bearing cv. Baramasia, treatment with TIBA, Ethrel [ethephon], KNO3 or maleic hydrazide failed to have any significant effect on flowering. Treatment with these substances markedly increased yields in the on year. In the following off year, treatment with ethephon or KNO3 produced the highest yield in cultivars Himsagar and Langra, respectively. The treatments caused an increase in length of panicle in both years, irrespective of the cultivar. In Himsagar and Langra, treatment with maleic hydrazide produced a marked increase in the number of flowers per panicle and Ethrel proved most effective in increasing the number of hermaphrodite flowers. The treatment with maleic hydrazide and KNO3 increased the number of male flowers per panicle.
