Abstract : Structural changes which have occurred in the light of ongoing economic and international trade reform in India are reviewed. Information is provided on domestic demand, market potential and prospects for upland crop products (UCPs). The study covers the main UCPs (soyabean, maize and cassava), the major staple food grain (rice), fresh fruits (mango, grape, apple), onion, mango pulp, mushrooms and cut flowers. Chapters included are: policy measures implemented in Indian agriculture; dietary patterns; the supply of and demand for feed; domestic demand and market potential of UCPs; emerging markets of fruits and vegetables in India; successful and failed marketing attempts. It is concluded that, in order to improve the prospects of UCPs, there should be increased investment in research and extension for improved yields; stronger links between production, processing and exports; higher domestic prices; improved quality of planting materials and renovation of existing orchards; promotion of processed products; establishment of business-orientated cooperatives; improved transport and provision of marketing support. The importance of infrastructure for this is also discussed.
