Abstract : Heavy fruitlet abscission causes great losses to mango growers. Fruit abscission in relation to peroxidase activity and the oxidation of endogenous IAA by IAA-oxidase in fruits was investigated. For 2 years, intact and about to abscise fruitlets, at 3 developmental stages, along with their pedicels, were collected from mango cv. Dusheri trees growing in India. Peroxidase and IAA-oxidase activities of fruits were determined. Fruitlets about to abscise exhibited significantly higher enzyme activities than intact fruitlets at pin head, pea and marble stages of development. Enzymatic oxidation of IAA, leading to depleted levels of IAA in developing fruits, is an important factor contributing in the process of abscission.
