Hypoglycaemic potential of Mangifera indica leaves in rats.

Abstract : Hypoglycaemic activity of 50% ethanol extract of M. indica leaves (collected in May from India) was studied in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. In normal rats, the extract was administered once at doses of 100, 250 or 500 mg/kg, p.o. The highest decrease (37.73%) in plasma glucose levels was obtained with a dose of 250 mg/kg 8 h after administration. In diabetic rats, the extract produced significant hypoglycaemic properties within 3 days when given at 250 mg/kg, p.o., for 10 days. The LD50 value of the extract was >4.64 g/kg, p.o.
