Abstract : Mango production in Egypt is reviewed. In 1992, 1993 and 1994, the total mango production in Egypt was 179, 197 and 180 thousand tonnes, respectively. In 1993, most of this production occurred within the Nile Valley (97.5%). Production in the lower Egypt Governorates was 64% of the total production, while middle Egypt Governorates produced 27% of the total production. The most productive areas were Sharkia, Ismailia, Giza, Fayoum, Qena and Nobaria Governorates, producing 75, 37, 36, 17, 6 and 4.5 thousand tonnes, respectively, and yield/feddan (0.42 ha) was 7.01, 2.35, 5.78, 6.55, 7.82 and 2.32 tonnes, respectively. Yields from these Governorates was 88.8% of the total Egyptian production. The most important cultivars were Hindi, Pairi, Tymour, Ewas Zebda and Langara. These cultivars vary in fruit size and colour, seed size, pulp weight, and sugar, ash and fibre contents. Pairi has the strongest flavour. Production data for 1992, 1993 and 1994 are tabulated, and the origins, characteristics and growth of the cultivars grown are listed.
