Abstract : The pruning practices used by mango growers in South Africa are defined and illustrated, and the growth responses are discussed. These included pruning procedures after planting, shoot tipping to encourage branching of young trees, pruning to stimulate flushing of young bearing trees, and size maintenance pruning of fully-grown trees. The time of the first cropping in relation to long-term orchard performance is considered.
