Abstract : One method used to select superior rootstocks is to look for trees which perform well under selective conditions. The rootstocks can then be induced to flush and this growth can be used for vegetative propagation. However, if a grafted mango tree is cut back below the grafting union and no shoots exist on the rootstock, the rootstock generally does not flush and will die. Before cutting back, rootstocks were supported with approach grafts of seedlings with attached leaves on them. About 50% of the approach non-grafted trees resumed growth independently of the date of cutting back. Grafted trees which were cut back 12-13 months after approach grafting, resumed 80 and 100% of growth, respectively, compared with 53 and 47% of controls.
