Abstract : Research on modified atmosphere (MA) and controlled atmosphere (CA) storage of mangoes is reviewed. The optimum atmosphere composition is reported as 3-5% O2 and 5-10% CO2. These atmospheres can delay ripening but the benefits are not very significant. It is suggested that CA and MA would probably be beneficial in delaying fruit ripening during long-distance sea transport for 2 or more weeks. Keitt mangoes are very tolerant of insecticidal atmospheres and thus potential commercial application is feasible.
