Study on the mechanism of seedlessness in mango.

Abstract : Pollen viability and germination rate, embryo sac development and behaviour of chromosomes in pollen mother cells were studied in mango cv. Gonzhen Hongmang. Emasculation tests were conducted. No abnormalities in chromosome behaviour were observed and there were no significant differences in pollen germination and viability of early and late flowers. Pollination was essential for fruit set. Degeneration of the egg synergids, polar nuclei and antipodal cells in 1 or more ovules, shrinkage of ovule cells at an early stage and embryo disintegration after anthesis resulted in seedlessness.
