Abstract : Agricultural development and the evolution of agricultural research in Israel over the last 75 years are briefly reviewed. Initially citrus and grape production were the first fruits to be established, followed by temperate fruits (apples, peaches, pears, plums, apricots and sweet cherries) and then subtropical fruits (avocado, mango, banana, persimmon and litchi). Area and production figures for 1995, for a range of fruit crops, are tabulated. The changing objectives of research and the impact of technology on fruit growing is discussed.
