Abstract : The mango is native to India and ranks first in area and production among various fruit crops grown in the country. The tree has long gestation period especially those orchards raised from seedlings. Hence, at prebearing stage it is commercial practice to grow some crops/fruit types in inter-spaces of establishing orchards. The integration of ground-storey crops is being done without any consideration of possible adverse effects on the components and the growing sites. Mango-based agroforestry systems, cover and filler cropping, boundary plantations, management practices of various components integrated in the system, tree-crop interactions, farmers' knowledge and the future scope of mango-based agroforestry in India, are described.
