Abstract : The extent to which disease damage in mangoes might be minimised by naturally evolved ecological balances, and the extent to which these balances have been upset by commercial cultivation practices are discussed. The factors of the host genome, environment, micro- and macroflora and fauna which could be manipulated, improved or reassembled to adjust the balance, so that disease losses are minimal and product quality is maintained at the level dictated by commerce, are discussed. The future of research on mango diseases is considered. The common causal agents of stem end rot and kernel decay in fruit and nut crops in Australia are tabulated.
