Abstract : After the registration in South Africa in 1990 of the 4 mango cultivars Heidi, Neldica, Cerise and Neldawn (selected from 2 seedling populations), a breeding programme was initiated. The strategies involved in the breeding programme are discussed and include germplasm usage, pollination control, regional evaluation of seedlings and selections, and postharvest testing of selections. Some of the characteristics of the cultivars Heidi, Neldica, Joa, Chené, E9-4/12, E10-13/14 and E10-4/11 are discussed and compared with Tommy Atkins and Sensation.
