Abstract : Production and marketing history of major tropical fruit trees in Taiwan is described, and present and future goals for cultivar improvement are presented for bananas [Musa], pineapples [Ananas comosus], mangoes [Mangifera indica], papayas (pawpaws, Carica papaya), guavas [Psidium guajava], star fruits [Averrhoa carambola], Indian jujube [Ziziphus mauritiana], passion fruits (Passiflora spp.) and avocados [Persea americana], in preparation of Taiwan joining the World Trade Organization. It is concluded that the development of cultivars for consumer-orientated, small scale, local and all-year-round production is needed.
