Abstract : On 13 December 1993, fruits of mango cv. Tommy Atkins were harvested at the optimum stage for marketing from the base or half-way up the tree from trees in a plantation established on a dark red latosol in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil in 1988. In other trials, fruits were harvested on 3 dates between 7 December and 27 December or were taken from vigorous or less vigorous stems singly or in samples of 2 or 3 fruits/inflorescence. Evaluation of fruit quality showed that the position of the fruit had no effect on occurrences of physiological disorders although these were reduced by harvesting early. Fruit quality was superior on more vigorous stems.
