Abstract : Studies were carried out in 1987/88 and 1988/89 at Allahabad, India, to examine the effects of mango tree age (10 or 20 years old) and cultivar (10 commercial cultivars) on susceptibility to panicle malformation. Number, size, weight, moisture, dry matter, ash and C:N ratio of normal and malformed panicles were determined. The late mango cultivars Bhadauran, Safeda Malihabad and Rataul were the least susceptible to panicle malformation (0.0, 8.27 and 8.71% of panicles malformed, respectively). Vegetative malformation was more pronounced in young plants than in older plants. Floral malformation was directly responsible for reductions in the yield of mango plants. Malformed panicles showed higher C:N ratios than normal panicles. The most susceptible cultivar to malformation was Khasulkhas.
