Abstract : This review of the limited literature on drought as a major stimulus to tropical flowering shows that water stress is a required stimulus for floral initiation in many plants (including durian, rambutan, mango and mangosteen), but subsequent floral maturation requires good growth conditions. The possibilities are briefly discussed of using growth retardants to simulate water stress effects, or countering stress inhibitions by the application of suitable growth promoters.
