Abstract : A rapid and continuous increase in the dry-matter and ash content of mango leaves was observed from the base to the top of the shoot up to 4 months after leaf emergence. The levels of N, Ca and Mg in leaves increased, whereas P and K contents fell with the advancement in leaf age. The levels of all constituents were stable in leaves 4 - 5 months old borne on the 4th and 5 nodes from the base of the shoot and it is recommended that those leaves be sampled to ascertain the nutrient status of the tree. For assessing P and Mg contents 2-month-old leaves should be sampled; for K assessment the leaves should be no less than 3 months old, whereas for Ca or N they should be no less than 4 months old.
