Abstract : The mango collection of the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (CENIAP) is located in the dry tropical forest region of north-central Venezuela (10°17?N, 67°37?W) and comprises 123 accessions. Cultivars were investigated for commercial potential from 1952 to 1996 on the basis of tree size, average annual fruit yield for the main periods of the productive life cycle of any single tree, fruiting index, and some other fruit characteristics. An artificial scale from 1 to 3 was developed for these criteria. Of the 123 accessions only 21 had characteristics considered adequate for the fresh fruit market. Highest scores were obtained for Haden and Irwin (2.60); Rosa, Araque, Ott and Thomas (2.50); Duncan (2.37); Palmer (2.30); Kent, Tommy Atkins, Martinica, Glenn, Floringon, Early Gold, Harders and Julie (2.25); Albania, Fascell, Madama Francis and Rangel (2.12); Sensation (2.11); Edward, Valencia Pride and Rosita (2.00); Harry seedling (1.87); and Turnebull (1.62).
