Abstract : The mango cultivar and rootstock evaluation trials at Nelspruit produced their third crop this season. The focus is placed on the Nelspruit trials as the crop at Malelane was destroyed by a hailstorm and no reliable data are available from the Messina trials yet. This paper highlights the yield potential and fruit size of the different genotypes. The cultivar evaluation programme is currently being carried out with 40 cultivars and selections from the breeding programme. The highest cumulative yield was produced by the selection G10 but it also produced the smallest fruit. Looking at both yield and fruit size, 'Neldica' is the best performer at this stage. The rootstock evaluation project consists of six rootstocks in combination with four scion cultivars. A further 14 poly-embryonic selections with two scion cultivars have also been established in the orchards. At this stage the lesser known rootstocks are outyielding the commercial rootstock, 'Sabre'. For a given scion cultivar different yields are obtained with different rootstocks. It is however not possible to identify the best rootstock for a specific scion cultivar.
