Abstract : A study was conducted in South Africa to investigate the effects of calcium (Calcimax) and magnesium chelate (Magmax), sprayed individually or in combination (each at 1.5 litre/100 litre water during flowering) on 3- to 5-year-old mango cultivars Sensation or Tommy Atkins. Calcimax increased the incidence of internal breakdown in Tommy Atkins but not in Sensation fruits. Calcimax also increased the incidence of bacterial blackspot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae) in Sensation. The taste of Sensation fruits was not affected by treatments, while Magmax improved and Calcimax decreased the taste appeal of Tommy Atkins fruits.
