Abstract : A study was conducted in South Africa during 1994-96 to investigate the efficiency of different pruning and training strategies on mango cultivars Tommy Atkins and Sensation, under high density hedgerow systems. The pruning treatments included open vase, palmette, central leader, closed vase and standard. Pruning was done at October and November, and at postharvest. For Sensation, pruning trees early after fruit set (October) stimulated early vegetative growth and enabled the trees to bear normally the following season. Both the central leader and closed vase systems resulted in high yields of Sensation. Pruning Tommy Atkins trees to the pyramidal system increased colour development and reduced the incidence of inner fruit disorder. Pruning of Tommy Atkins trees must be after harvest.
