Abstract : Jain Group of Industries has established a banana and mango processing plant of 140 t/day capacity, which is Kosher Certified. The Group has undertaken large scale planting of mango in its captive Research and Development farm. For this purpose a large area of hilly terrain and plateau hitherto lying waste has been acquired. The farm has various soil types (mostly marginal soils) across its several sites. Encouraged by the initial success of some of the mango cultivars planted early on the farm, the area under mangoes has since been increased to about 130 ha with about 60?000 grafts of cultivars such as Alphonso, Baneshan, Dashehari, Kesar, Mallika, Ratna, and Totapuri. The limiting factors on specific sites were coped with by adopting improved production technology. The improved techniques adopted for establishing and managing mango plantations and the performance of mango cultivars on these marginal soils are discussed.
