Effect of ammonium nitrate sprays on flowering and harvest time of 'Manila', 'Ataulfo', and 'Tommy Atkins' mango in Nayarit, Mexico.

Abstract : The efficacy of 2 and 4% ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) sprays as promoters of early flowering in Manila, Ataulfo and Tommy Atkins mangoes was evaluated in Nayarit, Mexico. Three biweekly sprays of NH4NO3 beginning in November induced full bloom (anthesis) of Manila mango to occur 34-37 days ahead of the control, with harvest promoted by 44 days ahead of the control. In Ataulfo, 3 biweekly sprays of NH4NO3 (2%) starting in November also promoted earlier bloom, with harvest occurring 22 days earlier than in the control. NH4NO3 was ineffective at promoting earlier flowering in Tommy Atkins.
