Abstract : The fumigant 1,2-dibromoethane is strongly sorbed by foodstuffs and packing materials and subsequently released slowly from them. Studies in Australia showed that the sorbed gas had a significant effect on the level of control of infestations of Dacus tryoni (Frogg.) in mangoes that had been kept in the original fumigated cardboard carton for a period of time (1-3 days) sufficient for the retained gas to have diminished to negligible amounts. Comparison with the dose required for a specific level of control in fruit removed from the carton immediately after airing when fumigation was completed showed that the effect of the sorbed gas was to reduce significantly the dosage required.
