Abstract : Mango hopper, Idioscopus niveosparsus (Leth.) is a serious pest on mango. Conventional insecticides like endosulfan, carbaryl, etc. were found less effective in controlling the hopper. Therefore, newer insecticides were evaluated at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research. Two experiments were conducted one on each of the variety, Alphonso and Banganpalli, during 1998. The treatments were imidacloprid (Confidor 200 SL) 0.2 ml/lt, 0.4 ml/lt and 0.8 ml/lt, lambda-cyhalothrin (Karate 5%) 0.5 ml/lt, azadirachtin 3000 ppm (Nivaar) 2 ml/lt and azadirachtin 10000 ppm (Econeem) 1 ml/lt. Results of both experiments showed that imidacloprid was effective at all doses tested including the lowest dose of 0.2 ml/lt. Lambda-cyhalothrin was also effective and was comparable with the standard monocrotophos. Efficacy of the azadirachtin (3000 and 1000 ppm) seemed to depend on the level of hopper density. At lower densities (4 per panicle), they were as effective as the synthetic chemicals.
