Chemotaxonomic studies on some Mangifera species by chemical compositions in the bark.

Abstract : Composition of acetylated hexane-extracts from the bark of 12 Mangifera species were investigated by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). The species analyzed were M. caloneura, M. cochinchinensis, M. flava, M. foetida, M. gedebe, M. griffithii, M. indica, M. macrocarpa, M. oblongifolia, M. odorata, M. pentandra, and M. sylvatica. Two different genera in the same family, Anacardium occidentale and Bouea macrophylla, were included as outgroup taxa. GLC analysis revealed the differences in chemical compositions of hexane-extracts (mainly containing aliphatic compounds) among species, and a total of 39 compounds were selected for the taxonomic study. When UPGMA cluster analysis was done based on the presence or absence of these selected compounds, the 12 Mangifera species were divided into two major groups; (1) M. indica, M. odorata and M. flava, and (2) the 9 other species and two outgroup taxa. In addition, when UPGMA analysis was performed after the selected compounds having trace amounts in the species were scored as absence, the obtained dendrogram was almost the same as the previous one, except for the replacement of M. flava to M. oblongifolia in the first group. Relationships among Mangifera species analyzed were discussed.
