Abstract : In a trial planted by the ARC-ITSC at Nelspruit, Melelane and Messina during 1992-98, 52 promising mango (Mangifera indica) selections are being evaluated and compared with commercial cultivars. Each cultivar/selection was grafted on Sabre and Peach rootstocks. Yields and fruit size of the genotypes included in the trial varied significantly. Preliminary results indicate that several genotypes outperform commercial cultivars regarding yield, but most of these high yielding genotypes have negative characteristics such as alternate bearing patterns or small fruit size. Neldica, an ARC-ITSC bred cultivar, was the most consistent performer.
