The status of mango variety improvement and its developing trend in China.

Abstract : The subject is discussed under the following headings: (1) current status of selection and breeding, including selections from chance seedlings, new varieties from artificial hybridization and mutation breeding; (2) facing potential problems; and (3) developing trends. Zihuamang and Hongxiangya are seen as promising new mango varieties for commercial production. The future breeding goal is to breed plump-fleshed, high quality new varieties with a small pit and rich, juicy, aromatic and fibreless flesh.
