Abstract : The procedure adopted, and results obtained, in acreage estimation of rice, groundnuts, tea, mango, cashews and coconuts in Tamil Nadu using satellite data are reported. The sample segment approach was flexible enough to use digital remote sensing data from multiple satellites and overcome problems caused by cloud cover, most common in the kharif [monsoon] season. A segment grid size of 5 × 5 km and sample fraction of 25% gave good results with 90% accuracy and a 90% confidence level for acreage estimation of samba rice and kharif groundnut. Pilot studies on the horticultural crops gave promising results.
