Abstract : Originating from M. indica in the region now occupied by Bangladesh, mangoes spread eastwards at first and later into the islands of the south Pacific. Movement westward probably took place in the sixteenth century to East Africa, West Africa and the New World to reach the West Indies in the eighteenth century and Florida in 1833. If current interest in this crop for export from India increases, the initiation of a breeding programme will be inevitable. Much variation exists but cross incompatibility presents a problem.
