Abstract : A study was conducted in Malihabad block, Lucknow district, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1996-97 with the following main objectives: to work out the costs incurred and returns received by mango (Mangifera indica) orchards of different age groups (0-4 years, 5-10 years, 11-15 years, 16-20 years, and 21 years and above); and to identify major production-related problems faced by mango growers. The costs incurred on mango orchards was highest (Rs 90?536/ha) in the first year. Costs incurred from the second year onwards varied from Rs 7306 to Rs 18?459/ha/annum at different orchard age. Mango orchards gave net returns varying from Rs 27?097 to Rs 305?487.20/ha/annum at different orchard age. Among the problems in mango production, damage due to insect-pest and diseases and damage due to natural calamities were the most significant.
