Abstract : The dynamics of sugars and nitrogen in leaves during flowering and fruit growth of adult mango cultivars and hybrids was investigated. Regular bearing cultivars, Neelum and Totapuri, recorded lower percentage of sugars and starch in the leaves compared to alternate bearing cultivars, Alphanso, Baneshan and Dashehari. The 'on' year trees had high sugars and starch compared to 'off' year trees. The starch in leaves declined at fruit development stage, indicating the breakdown of starch to reducing and nonreducing sugars. The nitrogen content in leaves was highest in Baneshan, Dashehari and Alphanso. The 'on' year trees recorded low nitrogen in leaves during fruit bud development (1.53 mg/g) and flowering (1.50 mg/g). In 'off' year trees, nitrogen rose during the stage corresponding to FBD stage of 'on' year trees and declined gradually.
