Abstract : The survival of mango plants, i.e. grafted mango (cv. Dushehari), and seedlings raised in situ and in polyethylene bags, under various water levels was evaluated in Indian Punjab, India, during 1992-93. Watering treatments were: (T1) placing a pitcher at the side of roots during October and the application of water (12?240 ml) at 36-day intervals; (T2) direct application of water (DAOW) at 1360 ml every 4 days; (T3) DAOW at 2720 ml every 8 days; (T4) DAOW at 4080 every 12 days; and (T5) no water application (control). Plants grown under T1 generated the highest values for survival rate (80 to 100%), plant height and stem girth. However, no significant variations in growth were observed with the direct application of water at 4-, 8- and 12-day intervals. The highest average plant height (50 cm), stem girth (3.51 cm) and number of branches per plant (5.1) were recorded in grafted mango plants.
