Abstract : The studies described were made to determine the factors associated with the poor performance of cv. Rataul in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. Panicle emergence started in mid-January and continued until March; the panicles attained their maximal growth rate 2-3 weeks after emergence, and they required 5 weeks to reach maturity. The average percentage of perfect flowers/panicle was only 0.5%, but in thinned panicles it was 2.7%. Peak anthesis occurred between 2 and 4 a.m., and dehiscence between 8 a.m. and 12 noon. The stigma was highly receptive on the day of anthesis, but thereafter its receptivity rapidly declined. All the fruits dropped before reaching maturity.
