Abstract : An experiment was conducted on mango cultivars Arka Aruna, Arka Puneet, Amrapalli, Mallika, Prabha Shankar, Ratna and Sindhu during July 1999-June 2000 to develop a softwood grafting technique. The average number of days for sprout initiation varied from 11.74 (Mallika) to 19.57 days (Sindhu). The average number of days taken for sprout initiation on scion varied in different months irrespective of the age of rootstocks used. It was observed that in the month of July, August, September and October, less number of days were taken for sprout initiation. The success of grafting in different hybrid grafts varied significantly for different seasons due to the direct influence of environmental factors. The gradual decrease in grafting success during winter months in comparison to the rainy season may be due to the presence of low temperature and less humidity in atmosphere, while relatively high mortality of grafts in the summer months relates to the effect of high temperature and low amount of rainfall during the season. Varietal influence had lesser influence compared to the seasonal effect on the percentage of graft success. The season and varietal effects were more pronounced than the age of the rootstock.
