Abstract : An experiment was conducted in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India during 1995-97 to determine the suitability and profitability of vegetable intercrops in young mango orchards. The intercropped plants were lady's finger [Abelmoschus esculentus]-carrot, chilli-onion, aubergine-tomato, bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria]-radish, sponge gourd [Luffa aegyptiaca]-tomato, fallow-pea, and the control. The maximum treatment differences in both the kharif and rabi vegetables were significant throughout the 3 years of experimentation, including their mean values. The maximum mean yield of 7.18 q/ha was recorded in lady's finger followed by bottle gourd (5.62 q/ha) and aubergine (5.16 q/ha). Similarly, during the rabi season, onion produced a maximum yield of 26.68 q/ha (superior than the other treatments). The yield of mango in vegetables as intercrops was significant. A maximum net income of Rs 88?757.32/ha was obtained from bottle gourd-radish plots.
