Abstract : The African Fruit Fly Initiative is adapting and developing fruit fly control technologies for commercial and small-scale fruit (principally mango) producers in east, west and southern Africa. Initial surveys have shown mango fruit fly infestation levels of up to 80% may occur. In addition, producers may suffer loss of export markets due to fruit fly infestations. Activities so far have included surveys, the local development of bait for use in control methods, and training and teaching. Future development of these activities will also highlight the training of both PhD level scientists and of Plant Protection Officers.
