Abstract : In order to find out the best period and to assess the influence of using polytube as antitranspirant in stone grafting of mango under Varanasi conditions of North India an experiment was conducted during 1994-95 and 1995-96 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. There were three cultivars (Amrapali, Mallika and Dashehari), three grafting dates (1, 16 and 31 August), without and with polytube as antitranspirant for covering the graft scions after grafting. Maximum initial sprouting (65.11 and 69.55%) was recorded in Amrapali, 16 August grafting (68.44 and 73.11%) and use of polytube as antitranspirant (65.03 and 70.52%) for 1994-95 and 1995-96, respectively. Maximum mortality of sprouted grafts was recorded within a period of 2-months after grafting, which successively declined thereafter. Total mortality in initially sprouted grafts was significantly more in Dhashehari (50.82% and 40.57%), 31 August grafting (52.20% and 44.34%) and in open condition (51.20% and 43.60%) during 1994-95 and 1995-96, respectively.
