Abstract : Changes in carbohydrate reserves, total N and the anatomy of healthy and malformed shoots of the cvs Dashehari and Chausa were followed before and after fruit bud differentiation. Acid hydrolysable polysaccharides and total carbohydrates remained at higher levels in leaves, stems and panicles of malformed than healthy shoots in both cvs; total N was little affected. There were also marked anatomical differences between the rachides of healthy and malformed panicles. Flower malformation was associated with the accumulation of excessive amounts of hydrolysable polysaccharide. Two explanations for the occurrence of malformed shoots are offered.
