Abstract : To characterize the productive canopy structure of tropical fruit trees in Indonesia, 3 Citrus spp. (C. hystrix, C. medica and C. reticulata) located in West Java and 3 mango cultivars (Golek, Gadung and Manalagi) located in East Java were observed. The result showed that the more the canopy facilitates homogeneous light penetration, the more productive the canopy is. Umbrella, pagoda and open-bunch canopy types produced fruits significantly higher than other canopy types (broomstick and ellipsoid). However, for mango cultivars, these types caused very low percentage of vegetative twigs. Another characteristics of productive canopy structure that could be drawn from this observation were in general fewer number of leaves, shorter twig length and greater twig diameter. Partial correlation analyses showed that only the twig diameter had significant correlation with fruiting ability.
