Abstract : An experiment was conducted during 1994-99 in Maharashtra, India, to assess the establishment of Stylosanthes hamata in mango, cashew, aonla [Phyllanthus emblica] and oil palm orchards. The yield and proportion of S. hamata was high during the first two years after sowing but declined remarkably the following years. In the field, the forage yields of S. hamata declined slowly, however, its proportion to total forage yield was least affected. The actual yield of S. hamata declined most rapidly when sown in aonla orchard, followed by oil palm, cashew, old mango and high density mango. It is suggested that S. hamata could be permanently established in the studied orchards by sowing the seeds once or twice in early two years. However, a good yield of S. hamata can be obtained by sowing the seed every other year in any of the studied horticultural orchards.
