Abstract : This chapter describes the research effort being made to understand the biology and ecology of phylloplane-associated xanthomonads and describes the power of molecular genetics tools to reveal patterns of population structure and genetic change. The pathovar mangiferaeindicae mango pathosystem is used as a model to characterize the biological significance of Xanthomonas sp. pv. mangiferaeindicae [?Xanthomonas campestris pv. mangiferaeindicae] from Brazilian pepper [Schinus terebinthifolius] as an inoculum source for mango infections.
