Abstract : Fruit and stem-end rot symptoms in immature mango fruits, characterized as black rot associated with gum exudation and fruit deformation, were observed in Kahnouj region (Sarras), Iran in spring 2001. The isolates developed stromatic, mostly aggregated, spherical and dark brown pycnidia with thick walls, and two-celled oval and dark brown conidia in potato dextrose agar and mango fruit samples. Based on these characteristics, the causal pathogen was identified as L. theobromae. Pathogenicity tests on mature and immature mango fruits confirmed the identity of the pathogen. This is the first report of L. theobromae causing fruit and stem end-rot of mango in Iran.
