A note on the pollen wall ornamentation of a Mangifera indica hybrid and its varieties.

Abstract : An electron microscopic observation of the pollen grains of mango cultivars Neelum, Kalpad and its hybrid was conducted. The basic ornamentation character is referred as the primary and the characters associated with this are recorded as the secondary characters. Considering pollen ornamentation, the primary characters of Neelum and Kalpad showed a striate-pitted pattern while the hybrid had striate-reticulate ornamentation. Though the primary character of Neelum and Kalpad was similar, the characters of the lirae (secondary character) of the 2 cultivars were found to be distinctly different. The lirae of Neelum were long, dichotomous and weaved at the colpi margins, while those of Kalpad were twisted, bridged and the polar reticulam was weaved.
