Abstract : Mango cv. Alphonso fruits were collected from various mango growers from Vengurla, Kudal, Sawantwadi, Malvan and Devgad tahsils of Sindhudurg district (Maharashtra, India) during the first and second fortnight of May and first fortnight of June 2002. After ripening, the fruits were cut to observe the incidence of fruit flies and the intensity of fruit fly infestation. Observations were also taken on tree ripe fallen fruits (TRFFs). During the first and second fortnight of May 2002, the fruit fly infestation was observed to be zero in all the locations. During the first fortnight of June, 14.3% fruit fly infestation was observed in Vergula and 15.0% in Kudal, whereas in Sawantwadi, Malvan and Devgad, the fruit fly infestation was 7.14, 5.7 and 4.00%, respectively. The result indicated that the Alphonso fruits harvested before June were free from fruit fly infestation. However, observations on TRFFs indicated that such fruits were prone to infestation by the fruit flies.
