Abstract : In this study, the activity of hexane extracts and ethanolic fractions from the hexane extracts (EFHE) from M. indica seeds against H. contortus were tested using the egg hatch test. Phytochemical tests were also conducted to detect micromolecular constituents. Extracts were evaluated at 0.08, 0.4, 2.0, 10.0 and 50.0 mg/ml concentrations. It was shown that the EFHE inhibited 95.66% of egg hatching at 50.0 mg/ml and was dose-dependent. Hexane extracts at similar concentrations had no significant effect on egg hatching. EFHE were mainly composed of proanthocyanidins and to a lesser extent by hydrolysable tannins, triterpenes and saponins. These results indicate that the utilization of EFHE from M. indica may be useful in the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep and goats.
