Abstract : A study was conducted to investigate the possibility of strengthening existing control methods, with emphasis on soft brown rot (Nattrassia mangiferae) and anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata]), through continuous measurements of infection and potential decay levels in orchards and packhouses, to make calculated timely adjustments to strategic decisions regarding preharvest protection, picking, packing and export. Data were collected in 'Kent' and 'Keitt' mango orchards in the Letsitele valley and Ofcolaco areas of South Africa, and preliminary results which can form part of such an early warning system, are presented.
