Abstract : Characteristics of mango as a convenience fruit used for fresh consumption, cooking and processing (e.g. dried fruit) are outlined. The International Fresh-cut Produce Association (IFPA) determined an annual growth rate of 3-5% of volumes of sales in the USA, and 1-2% in Latin America in 2000. Mexico is the main world exporter of mango, and the 4th producer after India, China and Thailand. Data are tabulated on production, exports and imports of mango of India, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Haiti and Guatemala in 2002. Factors of strengths and weaknesses of mango market in Mexico are considered. Suggestions for improvement of production, profitability, quality and marketing techniques are outlined.
