Abstract : In 2000, the production of mangoes in Brazil totalled 968?942 tons, of which 219?084 and 225?672 tons respectively were produced in the states of São Paulo and Bahia and the remainder in Pernambuco, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Paraiba, Piaui and Sergipe. Analysis of a census carried out in São Paulo in 1995-96 revealed that mangoes were grown on 5482 farms with a total area of 23?100 hectares. Between the middle of the 1970s and the 1980s, the number of trees grown per hectare increased from 100 to 140, and there was marked increase in planting between 1988 and 1990. Although most farmers have a low level of education, technical assistance was used at 76% of farms and on 81% of the planted area. Family assistance was needed at most orchards, indicating that modern fruit growing requires skilled human labour resources. Data are presented in 6 tables.
